151

your swollen heart disintegrates
beneath the strokes of my lethal pen
but your cry still echoes in my veins
like sirens

i am suffocated
by the formaldehyde skyscrapers
left reeling around my pupils

that impending darkness
prompts my intestines to squirm
repelled by the senseless cycle

the grim diminuendo hummed
through that harrowing evening
while ill-mannered sun seeped into the home
with disregard for your suspended soul

i failed to comfort your father
he shuffled thoughtlessly
the fragile bird
beating his clipped wings

that sunday lashes me with nightmares
wounding my clouded reality
penetrating my cloak of colors and sounds

my heart encases itself with fear
i am my own mother now

something is absent when i awaken
each morning i remember less and fabricate more
until you are nothing but a wasteland
of my fractured memories

were you ever
as lustrous as the stained-glass mosaic
i’ve constructed in my mind?
